Shot Prompting

A camera vocabulary for AI image and video

Most AI images look alike because nobody told the camera where to stand. This is a working vocabulary for directing it: shot sizes, angles, moves, lenses, composition, light and time, each with a prompt you can paste and a reason to reach for it.

Anatomy

A shot is a sentence with a camera in it.

Medium close-up, low angle looking up at a lighthouse keeper bracing against the rail on a storm-lashed gallery. Slow dolly push in. 85mm lens, shallow depth of field. Hard rim light from the lamp behind, rain caught in the beam. Real-time speed.

  • Shot size
  • Angle
  • Subject & setting
  • Movement
  • Lens
  • Light
  • Time
  1. Lead with the camera.

Put shot size and angle first. Words near the start of a prompt tend to carry the most weight.

  2. One move per clip.

A push-in and an orbit and a tilt in five seconds usually comes back as none of them.

  3. Describe the effect, not just the name.

"Dolly zoom" is jargon. "The subject stays the same size while the background stretches away" is an instruction.

  4. Don't contradict yourself.

"Extreme close-up" plus "full body, standing in a field" forces the model to pick one, and it picks at random.

  5. Say what stays still.

Video models drift and float. "Locked-off, no camera movement" and "real-time speed" are directions too.

  6. Lens numbers are a look, not physics.

"85mm" won't simulate optics, but it reliably signals portrait compression and soft backgrounds. Use focal lengths as mood shorthand.

01

Shot Size

How much of the subject is in frame?

Example photo: Extreme Wide Shot

Extreme Wide Shot

Stills + Motion

aka EWS · extreme long shot · ELS

The landscape is the subject; the person is a speck inside it.

Scale, isolation, insignificance. Use it when the place matters more than the person.

extreme wide shot, the figure tiny against a vast landscape
Example & tip

Extreme wide shot of [subject] crossing a salt flat, the figure tiny against an endless white horizon.

Tip. Name the size relationship ("tiny figure", "dwarfed by") — the shot-size term alone often gets ignored.

About the photo. Generated with FLUX.1 [dev] from this entry's example prompt, with the same character as the clips.

Example photo: Establishing Shot

Establishing Shot

Stills + Motion

wide establishing shot that shows the whole location and time of day
Example & tip

Wide establishing shot of [subject]'s apartment building at dusk, windows lighting up one by one, rain-slick street below.

Tip. Describe the place, not the person. If you lead with a character, models push in closer.

About the photo. Generated with FLUX.1 [dev] from this entry's example prompt, with the same character as the clips.

full shot, head to toe, feet visible at the bottom of frame
Example & tip

Full shot of [subject] in a tailored overcoat, head to toe, feet planted on cracked pavement.

Tip. "Feet visible" is the phrase that actually stops models cropping at the knees.

Tip. The single most effective angle word. Even a mild "slightly low angle" changes how a portrait reads.

Tip. Give a degree. Without one you get either nothing or a wildly rotated frame.

About the photo. Generated with Nano Banana (reference-based) from this entry's example prompt, with the same character as the clips. The model kept the camera level, so the frame was rotated 20° in post, which is all a Dutch angle is.

Stillness, observation, tableau. Lets the performance do the work.

locked-off static camera on a tripod, no camera movement
Example & tip

Locked-off static camera on a tripod as [subject] paces back and forth through a sunlit room, no camera movement.

Tip. Video models love to drift. If you want stillness, say "no camera movement" outright.

About the clip. Generated with MiniMax H3 Max Turbo at 480p from our shared start frame, prompted: “Locked-off static camera on a tripod, no camera movement. The woman slowly paces left and right across the gallery.”

Push In

slow arc shot curving 90 degrees around the subject
Example

Slow arc shot curving 90 degrees around [subject] as they turn to face the window.

About the clip. We asked for a full 360° orbit and the model delivered this partial arc instead, a common failure that makes a good arc. Original prompt: “Smooth 360-degree orbit around the woman, the camera circling her while keeping her centered.”

Motion

aka 360 shot · circle shot · spin

A full circle around the subject, lens locked on them.

smooth 360-degree orbit around the subject, keeping them centered
Example & tip

Smooth 360-degree orbit around [subject] standing in a field of tall grass, keeping them centered.

Tip. Full orbits are hard to finish in a short clip. A 180 reads more cleanly in 5 seconds.

Urgency, realism, chaos. It feels like someone was there.

handheld camera with subtle natural shake, documentary feel
Example & tip & reference

Vertigo, dread, the moment the floor drops out.

dolly zoom, the subject stays the same size while the background stretches away behind them
Example & tip & reference
